Spring Cleaning with ARM & HAMMER #BakingSodaTips

by Ivy B

Who doesn’t know Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is a great odor neutralizer?  I used it in our diaper pail when baby girl was much smaller (the smell from those baby diapers get down right horrifying at times) and on occasion, have had to add a splash to our kitchen trash can to squelch the stench so that we didn’t have to take it out to the outside garbage can before it was full.

Well, I’m happy to report that I was supplied a box of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda and a special plastic container for baking soda dispensing from Smiley360 to help me deliver some other ideas on how to use baking soda for your Spring Cleaning needs.

Here are a few ways I utilized my Arm & Hammer kit to jump into my spring cleaning:

1) Cleaning my porcelain kitchen sink.  That sink is atrocious (you may remember me mentioning it in a previous post) … it’s really old and doesn’t appear to have been well cared for.  Unfortunately, since we only moved into the house last June, we’re not planning on any replacements or updates for a while.   I let some scum build up before the kit arrived … partially because things got really busy, and partly because I wanted to see what Arm & Hammer could do to it.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found a miracle product to take back 30 years of abuse on that sink.  But, using baking soda did clean the sink of the most recent gunk and there was no harsh fumes.  Because it’s mildly abrasive, it helped to clean the rubbery pieces leading to the garbage disposal pretty well.

2) Cleaning the kid’s bathroom.  While baking soda didn’t do much for all the stains in the bathtub, I was extremely impressed with how well it removed soap scum from the tile walls that I haven’t been able to take off since we’ve moved in.  Those soap spots on the tile drove me crazy, but I didn’t have enough strength to clean them myself (although, I probably could have used a razor blade, now that I think about it).  All I did was sprinkle a little baking soda on a warm, wet sponge and rub.  Those spots came out quickly.  I couldn’t have been happier.

The best part about cleaning the kid’s tub with baking soda, is I don’t have to worry about any harsh, toxic chemicals that may be left over when she’s ready to bathe.  Since we’ve used it IN bath water for bad diaper rashes, I know there’s no harm in any being left over from cleaning!  That’s brings me some peace of mind anyway!

Some other fabulous uses for Arm & Hammer:

Deodorize.  Just like neutralizing odors in the trash cans, keeping baking soda in your linen closet will help it to continue smelling fresh.  Or, to neutralize odors in the kitchen drain, pour a half cup down while running warm tap water.

Laundry.  A cup of baking soda in your wash will help neutralize odors and clean better than your liquid detergent, alone.  I could really use this in our wash when hubby’s clothes come in after he works on the cars.  A half cup in the rinse cycle will freshen sheets and towels.

The best part of using Arm & Hammer baking soda for cleaning is that it’s relatively inexpensive.  A 1 pound box will typically run about $1.
