Potty Training My Tot (almost)

by Ivy B

Several months ago, I noticed an undeniable level of interest in my toddler toward using the potty.  I held off as long as I could and finally broke down to buy her a Potty Time package which included a Potty Time video, Hopkins Potty Seat, and a watch (if you’re following our blog, you know we use sign language and use the Signing Time systems).  At some point, I also downloaded the free Potty Time app.

Baby girl’s interest was at it’s peak and we got started with the package as soon as it arrived.  The first moment I put her on the potty, she “went”.  We had a spectacular week of accomplishments and rewards and she was using her sign language to indicate when she was ready to go.  We even had some amusing moments when she would fake a “strain” because she knew the end result was an extra special treat.  Things went so well, family and friends all said she was going to be potty trained in 2 weeks.

Then … she just stopped.  There were no major upsets, nothing ever scared her, she just stopped.  It was almost as if she “got it” and felt there was no need to continue doing it (much like everything else she’s accomplished and then dropped).  On occasion, she’ll sign potty and I’ll get everything ready, and then she’ll walk away from the bathroom.

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

What methods do you (or have you) used to potty train your toddler?  Have you ever experienced such a situation?

My daughter started showing interest in potty training right before she was two. We had a very rocky time of it, trying EVERYTHING for a year. Now two months after her 3rd birthday, I feel comfortable saying she's "trained" though we still have a few accidents a week and need pullups at night.
For my son, I used some of the strategies from one of the potty train your child in a day books and they worked magic.

I wrote a guest post about this very topic a week or so ago…potty training was truly my worst motherhood nightmare!

However, it all worked out and my 3 were successfully trained.
Here's the link to my guest post:

I hope this helps!

Potty training is 27 years in my rear view mirror. My oldest daughter was 20 months old and she was staying dry through the night. I bought her a potty chair, which she refused to use so I ended up with the little seat that goes on the toilet seat and a step stool for her. Potty training was a breeze with her.

Used the same method when my youngest daughter was ready and with the exception of a few night time accidents, she was out of diapers at 2.

We skipped the little potty chair due to lack of space at the old house and she LOVED the big potty for that one week.
Oddly enough, I blog about it and the very same day she was running around with nothing on waiting for her bath, did a little something on herself, stopped, signed "potty" over and over and she repeatedly said "pee pee, pee pee" and then, finally, another successful potty break.
Thank you all for the advice – I've read Carin's article and will look into the potty train in a day stuff 🙂
