Growing up, I don’t remember us making a huge deal out of Mother’s Day.  Although, we did spend the day at my Grandmother’s every year.  When I really think about it, I can’t remember whether the men did the work as the women sat around gabbing.  I’m pretty sure I recall Grandma cooking a big lunch for everyone.

Fast forward to now and I can’t think of a Mother’s Day I haven’t insisted on anything other than not working.  As a stay at home mom, I’ve put a lot of effort into leveling the parenting playing field.  I insist I deserve much needed time off as much as my husband does.  That said, I don’t expect or insist on presents, although I have nothing against them if they promote self-care and self-love.  Mainly, I believe any gift on Mother’s Day should be something that doesn’t scream “do more work”.  The only reason it’s okay to give me an appliance is if it lightens my work-load during the week.

I’m contemplating growing my hair out, which for me, means dealing with the hassles of short hair in my eyes.  If you’ve ever had a pixie cut, you know these kinds of struggles when deciding to let it grow.

At the same time, I remember how, when I had long hair, I’d think “I’m just going to let it loose today.”  2 hours into the day, you’re searching your purse for some way to pull back your hair and get it out of your face.

Books

I don’t know what mom worries whether or not she’s a good mom.  I can tell you, personally, the thought crosses my mind at least once a day.  On particularly rough days, I’m bound to tell myself I’m a terrible mom several times.

Aside from helping her get a sense that she’s going to be a better mom, reading 6 minutes a day can reduce stress by almost 70%.  So, giving mom a good book, like that mentioned above, will not only help her to improve herself and her relationship with her children, but will also promote some self-care time!  It’s a win-win.

Spa Day

Speaking of self-care and stress reduction, give mom a day out at time at the spa.  Make sure it’s not just for a routine hair cut, but insist she get a massage, facial, or other out-of-the-ordinary service to help her feel relaxed and beautiful.

A Funny Mom Shirt

I’m a toddler mom and I get some funny looks when I’m out in public with him.  I can’t think of a more appropriate gift than a snarky or funny mom shirt, especially if she’s a toddler mom.
